Over 100 of the big stars are refusing to allow licences for their music on karaoke.
This will apply to karaoke venues from January 2018.
However, the ban applies online right now.
It is thought that the artists may want to negotiate their own deals with the karaoke companies.
The artists may not want their songs overplayed.
Some may not like the idea of others belting out their songs.
At this time I do not know just exactly what this all means as there is a little confusion in the karaoke industry.
I do not know if the karaoke ban applies to classic songs or the entire artist's catalogue.
What is clear is that future releases by the artists will not have a karaoke version.
So, unless things are negotiated quickly we could see the karaoke pubs and clubs going quiet very soon.
Also, the karaoke manufacturers will suffer as they will not be allowed to make karaoke music.
This will see another one or two karaoke firms going out of business.
Here are a few of the artists that have refused karaoke licences.
Abba
Adele
Bee Gees
Bon Jovi
Coldplay
Eurythmics
Justin Timberlake
Katy Perry
The Killers
Madonna
New Order
Paul Weller
Prince
U2
This means that karaoke classics such as Bon Jovi's Living On a Prayer and Abba's Dancing Queen are now banned.

Re: Karaoke Licences To Be Refused By The Stars And Songs Banned
Ok so some of the big stars are preventing karaoke tracks to be made of their songs.
That should surely just apply to new songs right?
I say that because what about the karaoke songs and discs already made?
Let them try and stop their old songs being played at gigs.
For over 100 stars or groups to go on like this means some people are getting a little greedy.
Squeezing more out of the karaoke scene will only get them an old clapped out Ford Fiesta, if that.

I am surprised this didn't happen ages ago but hopefully the artists see sense.

This won't hold up in practice anyway. While a professional KJ won't be able to use songs from these artists and no new tracks can be professionally produced, there are plenty of YouTube videos and other places where fan karaoke versions get created. Many of them are high-quality too.
So sure, the artists can refuse derivative works legally, but they can't prevent people from making them.

Why now though?
At the end of the day, most people request the oldies anyway and they are already made.
I can't see the karaoke Nazis coming to many shows and trying to shut them down.

Pure greed and will backfire on these people.
