Plextor PX716A is indeed one of the best karaoke burners ever

Why We Need Karaoke Burners

To begin with, there are so many reasons why someone would like to rip or burn karaoke discs. The main reason should be to preserve the original in as new condition while playing the burned one. Many will also need to rip them for use on their computerised systems. Consequently, this page will deal with karaoke burners and list all those we believe can do a good job.

Firstly, karaoke discs are not like ordinary music CD’s which only have audio data. Karaoke discs have also got a text mix in with the audio. As a result, this is where the on screen graphics come from. Hence, we get CD+G – Compact Disc plus Graphics. Most CD drives should also be able to play music from a CDG. But reading and displaying the text is another matter.

When you look to buy a CD drive for burning karaoke discs, you will need to check the specifications. Obviously, look to see whether it supports Karaoke-CD, CD-Text, or DAO-96. If the drive has those capabilities, then the chances are, that it could both read and write karaoke discs. Whether the drive does a good job or not is for the user to find out. However, you would be looking to burn perfect karaoke disc without any graphics glitches. Furthermore, this is only possible with the correct CD drive and software. In brief, we recommend Power CD+G burner software together with the Plextor PX-716A using Verbatim CD’s. Of course, if you have other suitable combinations, please let us know.

Complete List Of Suitable Karaoke CD+G Burners

Indeed, we list all the CD/DVD drives or burners that may be able to rip and burn karaoke discs. Significantly, they have all had possitive burning and ripping tests in the past. However, please bear in mind that many of these drives are old. As such, they may only be available on the second-hand market like ebay, for example.

Also, other people may have had success which does not guarantee that you will. Karaoke Shack does not guarantee any of the following drives will work. In other words, they are drives or burners that other enthusiasts say they rip or burn karaoke discs successfully. Just to point out that you can’t just use any CD burner in your PC or laptop to burn karaoke discs. However, you can easily replace your standard CD player with a suitable karaoke burner. Obviously, they will be reasonably cheap but look out for a bargain.

Summing Up Karaoke Disc Burners

In general, the older Plextors seem to have a very good name for ripping and burning karaoke CDG discs. However, another firm took over Plextor and the quality of the drives was to suffer. They kept the Plextor name going, so they relied on that for sales. But their newer burners were no longer CDG compatible.

HP burners are also good. Indeed, HP drives from the 7500 to 9500 series can read and write CDG. However, those with the model number ending in 50 or 90 can’t. Also, if the model ID has a letter after the name of the drive it will not do CDG. For example, HP9100b 1.0c. To clarify, this letter refers to a different manufacturer. It also looks like they made drives for others.

Should you wish to tell us about your experiences with the above drives, then we would be grateful. This is because there will always be people who need to rip and burn karaoke discs. Of course, getting hold of the correct drive is important. Of course, many of the above drives are old. Indeed, some will be hard to find. With this in mind, a small review of some individual drives will help others out greatly. Obviously, this will hopefully prevent other karaoke disc collectors from wasting time and compact discs!

Karaoke Burning Software

Finally, remember that you need good software to compliment your ripper or burner. Since this article went live, Power Burner now have their mark 2 version¬†available. Despite this, we have not had any reports on its new functions. However, we can only assume that it is a better version of their older software. Should this be the case, then we couldn’t promote it highly enough. Moreover, if anyone should have the newer software, we would be happy to receive a review.

Suitable Karaoke Burning CD’s

On the whole, our feedback suggests most modern CD’s will give good results. However, we will recommend Verbatim CD’s as their reputation is second to none. Just to point out that you should us a low burning speed for better reliability.
